Barcelona was popular across a broad spectrum of European tourists in 2019. According to the results of a survey by flights and hotels portal Jetcost, Barcelona topped the list among French, Italian, Portuguese and Russian tourists.

Announced to coincide with the 40th edition of the Fitur tourism fair in Madrid, the survey also ranked Barcelona second among Germans (behind Palma de Mallorca) and Dutch (following Málagá), and fourth in the popularity stakes for British travellers (after Alicante, Málaga and Tenerife).

The city’s consolidation as a major global tourism hotspot was further highlighted in figures released by Aena for 2019 air traffic at Spain’s airports.

In terms of operations, 344,558 aircraft movements were registered in 2019, 2.7% more than the previous year. Commercial operations represented a total of 341,896 flights, also 2.7% up on 2018.
