Barcelona will be the latest city to join the Volotea network covering Spain, with a new route to Strasbourg planned for next year.
The airline company plans to offer 24,000 seats and two weekly services for its first route from Barcelona El Prat-Josep Tarradellas Airport. A total of 150 flights are scheduled to the Alsace city, one of Volotea’s bases in France.
“We are especially happy to be able to finally start operating in Barcelona,” said company founder and CEO Carlos Muñoz Beraza, “the city where we also have our headquarters and more than 250 workers. Our goal is always to contribute new destinations to airports and enrich the range of options. This connection with Strasbourg – a Volotea base where we have been operating since 2012 – allows us to present a direct and attractive alternative to connect both cities, at attractive prices.”
Volotea currently has two bases in Spain: Bilbao and Asturias. The airline operates at 20 Aena airports, and in 2018 transported more than 1,150,000 passengers in Spain, 40 per cent more than the previous year.
Excellent Growth Since Company Launch
Volotea has carried more than 22 million passengers since its first flight in 2012. In 2019, the company opened 41 new routes to serve a total line-up of 319 routes, operating flights to more than 80 mid and small-sized European cities in 13 countries: France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Greece, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Portugal, Malta, Austria, Ireland, Luxembourg and Morocco. The airline expects to have carried between 7.5 and eight million passengers by the end of 2019.
Volotea currently has 13 bases: Venice, Nantes, Bordeaux, Palermo, Strasbourg, Asturias, Verona, Toulouse, Genoa, Bilbao, Marseille and Athens (the last three inaugurated in 2018) and Cagliari (launched in May this year).
This year, Volotea has been operating its network with 36 aircraft – Boeing 717s and Airbus A319s – after adding six additional aircraft in 2019. Both models are recognised for their comfort and reliability, notes Volotea, including reclining seats that are five per cent wider than the average in airlines.
“The Airbus A319 is the aircraft model selected for its future growth and will allow the company to increase its passenger capacity by 25 per cent to 156 seats and to serve longer routes.”
